And so the LAN begins ... 2002-05-03 20:41:03
by: Slave
It's 9pm and the day has gone surprisingly well .. the Admin crew got to the venue this morning in good time and the network was setup and waiting for the gamers to come by 11am ..

70 players so far have shown their faces and with a lot more expected this evening and tomorrow morning it seems that we're going to get full rather quickly.

Highlight of the day has been Mobile Forces, which has turned out to be a game with a lot of promise if the demo is anything to go by. I've been playing it for the last 4 hours and its the most fun I've had since Medal of Honor.

Rage have come through once again with 10 free games from their back catalog for us to give away as prizes, a big thanks to Sabre for sorting that out.

Sky, of Challenge UK fame, has turned up and will doing some coverage of the q3 compos that are starting tomorrow morning. Expect to see some updates of the matches over on the C-UK website very soon.

Another place to read about SavLAN5 is the PlanetLAN web site as Dave, head planetlan honcho, is coming to see how we do things and lend us the WWCL game server for the CS competitions that also start tomorrow.

All in all things are going great, and if you're reading this and you're not coming to SavLAN5 I've got a feeling you're going to miss out on the best SavLAN yet!

Mobilise your Forces at SavLAN 2002-04-30 13:19:34
by: Slave
With only 3 days until the start of SavLAN5, and over 175 people signed up to come, I thought it about time I announce yet another sponsor to get people in the LAN'ing mood ..

Games company Rage have come up trumps with a box load of "LAN Demo" CD's of their latest game Mobile Forces for you all to try .. and some quality Moblie Forces T-Shirts to give away to some lucky punters at the LAN ..

What is Mobile Forces? Here's what Rage have to say about the game on the Mobile Forces web site:
Mobile Forces delivers explosive vehicle combat combined with traditional FPS action.

Built on top of Epic's latest Unreal Engine technology - graphics hardware is pushed to the limit by the use of static meshes to deliver complex believable environments, and poly counts go through the roof to give you smooth rolling terrain.

Mobile Forces offers the complete FPS offline/online multiplayer only experience with full AI bot support. The single focus of Mobile Forces is to create a gaming experience that any fan of the multiplayer-FPS genre will be at home playing.

A total of 8 different game modes are available. Along with traditional Deathmatch, Capture The Flag and Domination game types you’ll also find other modes such as Trailer, Captains, Detonation (and more!) game modes to quench your FPS thirst!

An impressive vehicle physics system correctly models suspension, gears, brakes etc Vehicles are not just "boxes that move" - shooting out the tyres makes a vehicle more difficult to control. The ‘crack’ shots among you can try to snipe the vehicle's petrol cap - resulting in one almighty explosion!

Players can choose either to drive a vehicle or you can ride shotgun and let one of your team-mates do the driving.
To read the rest of what Rage have to say about the game and see some screenshots take a gander here.

From what I can see on the web site this looks like its going to be a blast and I'm sure we'll set up a compo for it once we all work out how to play it .. well someone's got to win the free T-Shirts :)

SavLANs to count towards WWCL! 2002-04-17 08:51:39
by: Slave
I'm very pleased to announce that competitions run at SavLAN5 will now count towards the second season of the World Wide Championship of LAN-Gaming ..

World Wide Championship of LAN-Gaming!

What is the WWCL? .. here's what they have to say on their web site:
The WWCL - World Wide Championship of LAN-Gaming is the world's first league of its kind.

All WWCL tournaments are held at LAN parties, allowing individual players and whole clans to measure themselves in various disciplines and to gather valuable points for their WWCL ranking.

The ranking is a mathematical consideration of the following factors: finishing place, opponent skill, total number of participants and total number of tournaments participated in. This irons out any differences between LAN parties to a point that allows a fair evaluation of a player's skill.

At the end of the season the WWCL will hold a grand finale featuring all main contents. The top 16 players or clans of each discipline from all participating nations will come together at one last great event and compete for the grand prizes.
Here's what Dave Smith, UK WWCL Project Manager had to say:
"It's absolutely stonking news that Savage have agreed to support the WWCL and I'm sure that both organisations will be able to help and support each other in the coming months as Season 2 of the WWCL starts to take shape in the UK."
So not only will the winners of SavLAN5 competitions win our own sponsored prizes, if the competitions are covered by the WWCL they will also gain ranking points towards gaining a space at the WWCL grand finale!

Given that about £40000 worth of prizes were given away in Season 1 it's well worth checking out .. for more info on the WWCL and to register yourself, and your clan, checkout their web site.

by: Slave
We have been working hard behind the scenes to get some sponsorship for SavLAN5 and I am pleased to announce the first, of what I hope to be many, sponsors for the event.

AMD

AMD have come up trumps and sent along some of their brand spanking new Athlon™ XP processors to give away as prizes for our one on one competitions.

Here is what they have to say about the chip on their web site:
The AMD Athlon™ XP processor with QuantiSpeed™ architecture powers the next generation in computing platforms, delivering extra performance for cutting-edge applications and an extraordinary computing experience. The AMD Athlon XP processor is the latest member of the AMD Athlon family of processors designed to meet the computation-intensive requirements of cutting-edge software applications running on high-performance desktop systems.

To say we are excited at getting AMD involved is an understatement and I am hoping this will be the start of a rewarding partnership.
